They are framing up the bottom of the enclosure to try and make it look more ‘natural’ yet all these plants are on the outside of the space, with the visitors. This seems cruel to the animal, as surely they should be inside the enclosure with them. With the panda just sitting there as well it looks quite miserable, you really feel sorry for the animal and begin to care for it. This is definitely an overall approach i will not be drawing from when approaching the zoo as i feel it has far too a negative view on the zoo as a place. Although some people may be against zoos as a concept, they do do alot of good for the animals, and this is how i wish to try and show newquay zoo.

The set up of this image does not show the zoo in the best...

The set up of this image does not show the zoo in the best light. By capturing the animal in this small crop, the enclosure looks small and bare. It appears unnatural, and cold. There is a real artificial feeling towards the whole set up and it puts the zoo in a bad light. You do not feel like the animal is enjoying itself or comfortable, it looks sad and miserable. This is something we have to be sure of not to do for the article as not only will the zoo not allow these kinds of images, it is not what the magazine wants to show. We need to try and capture the animals in the best possible light so that they look happy and as natural as possible in that situation. The idea of the article is to get people to want to go to the zoo and see something the may not have otherwise, not to discourage them from going.

The way all these images come across is in a negative light....

The way all these images come across is in a negative light. They make the zoo appear to have these animal in these small, unnatural and unentertaining spaces for them. It makes seeing them quite hard to view as you sympathise with the animals, and it makes you question the idea of zoos as a whole. Here by the gorilla being in this small glass fronted house you feel like it has no privacy, no space away from the view of the public. It looks as if it has turned its back on the public yet it still cannot get away. This is something so sad to see, and is something to be really cautious of when shooting. Although from seeing newquay zoo i doubt this will occur as their enclosures are far more natural looking.

Photo

This image shows the contrast between the fake set up of the sky...

This image shows the contrast between the fake set up of the sky and world for these monkeys, to the real world. It again puts the zoo in a bad light as it creates this unnatural fake appeal to the set up of the enclosure. The animals do not seem excited or interested in their environment but more interested in what the people are doing looking at them. They are purely engaged on the outside world. It is really quite sad to see, as this is not the view of the zoo you want to come across. When photographing I need to be careful to try and make the animals not concentrated on us or the visitors, they need to look as if they are in their own world, immersed within their group.

The vast landscape is something i am used too seeing within...

The vast landscape is something i am used too seeing within cornwall. The fields upon fields that cascade over the view are monotonous and make you feel so far away. I find it hard being in cornwall as it is so far from home, so when you enter to see this vast amount of space it almost emphasises just how far i am. This view is something i could see from many places within and around falmouth, but I think it looks too engaging. Like you would want to look through this space. This is not how i feel towards the area, i want it to feel vast and isolated.

This image really caught my eye as it brings an outdoor vast...

This image really caught my eye as it brings an outdoor vast enviroment to an intimate place. Making the landscape seem something more personnel to that person, like there is a greater meaning to the place shown than we may have otherwise known. By bringing the outdoor vastness into a printed book, it tames it and scales it down, making it seem far easier to view and far less intimidating, but it also really puts a personnel twist onto the image. By it being in this bed environment, this is a very personnel space, and this adds a value to the image and scene. This could be something to maybe consider doing? as it could be a good representation of the landscapes I am close to from home, that i am not so much near too in distance here but i am through memory.

The colouration within this image really drew me to it. The way...

The colouration within this image really drew me to it. The way in which it is desaturated, with just a hint of the tones in areas of the image give it quite an old and dated feeling when viewing it. The flowers coming form this wet sand/mud land you can’t quite tell what it is, but it shows a beauty coming from an unexpected place. Giving the otherwise dull and bland landscape something beautiful within it, especially as here would be the last place you would expect to see something like this.

The saturation is really the thing that interested me within this image. Due the the colours being stripped back, this gives the scene a dated feel. Like there is no feeling towards the space, but it at the same time could be a memory. Looking back onto it in a faded manner. It would be something really interesting to play around with when shooting as it could really effect the way you would view the landscapes and how you feel when seeing them. As the lack of colour makes them really monotonous and has no real passion behind them.

The gate across the view of the landscape acts as not only a...

The gate across the view of the landscape acts as not only a visual barrier but also a mental barrier. It disconnects you from the space by blocking your view, not allowing you to see into anything. This idea of a physical barrier shows how i feel towards alot of the spaces but it is too literal. For my idea within this project it needs to be more subtle so it is more about how you feel towards the space rather than being visually cut off from it.

This image was quite minimalistic, the simplicity of the horizon...

This image was quite minimalistic, the simplicity of the horizon running central through the frame with the contrast the vertical stick stuck into the sand separating the horizon. It is quite an overdone concept, but it was more the idea of the division within the frame, without actually having to separate the image i was interested in. The stick petrudes far enough out of the horizon to separate the image into two halves, making you almost compare one to the other. This division makes you notice all the subtle differences that before you may not have otherwise noticed as it would have been quite monotonous within the frame.

It also has another influence within the frame that is similar to what I wish to do with my own work. The stick in the ground is a sign of mans presence. It clearly shows that although the landscape may look far and distant there has been someone there and this is not as distant as you may feel. This is something I was really interested with, within my landscapes as I often found myself feeling lost within Cornwall, but these small man made items throughout the landscapes reminded me that really I am never too far away.

isweariwasthere:another light leak result (not edited).

When stumbling upon this image it reminded me very much of my first shoot around the standing stones of cornwall where my film when developing it became exposed. This created these bold vibrant shades to stream across the image giving it this unusual colouration we would never have seen before. This made for some unique images that had an almost unrealistic feel to them, like an outter presence surrounding them, some even said “alien invasion” this is i found quite comical but you can see why people would link it to this due to its unique quality as it is not how we would originally see the space. This could be something to again try to experiment with as it made for some really powerful and effective images.

These two images show the traveling aspect of the landscape. To get around cornwall i found it nearly impossible without my car as it is all so isolated. I am used to an easy comute and coming here was quite the opposite. So having a car here makes it a little easier to get about and see the area. So this view from the car made for some interesting set ups as this was a direction i could have taken the project. Allowing my car to act as the safety barrier between me and the actual landscape. Using the lights to show the select area i wanted to be shown. But this was something I felt had been quite overdone, so wanted to try to keep to actually trying to emerse myself into these spaces.

The fog encrouching in the background adds an air of mystery to...

The fog encrouching in the background adds an air of mystery to the enviroment masking any further details you could gain from the horizon, making you feel like you could be deep inside this wood. The foreground being empty makes the trees appear quite menacing as they stand in line almost marking out a divide making it seem quite a trecharous place although there is a lightness to the image.

This mood that surrounds the image due to the positioning of the photographer, and the small details that you may just skip past without viewing properly. This is something I wish to try to create with my own work as the enviroment around me here in Cornwall is one that I find really quite intimidating and menacing to approach, even though I am constantly surrounded by it.

This image similarly reminded me of the work of Gursky. The way he has these monotonous views of vast areas that have all this repetition. This is something that really made me disconnect to the image as the repetition easily becomes boring and thus makes the landscape bland and uninteresting. Not making you want to know anymore about it. The dull colours as well adds a very wish washed approach to the image making no real area pop, making it again uninteresting to view, making the viewer quickly disconnect from the space and not question it any further. Theres a real separation to what the space could be like as there is no reason to be interested in it. This is not the way I want to approach the spaces as I do want the images to be engaging to the viewer.

This scene reminded me very much of the Cornwall landscapes we...

This scene reminded me very much of the Cornwall landscapes we are used to seeing. The way the girl is stood submerged into the space by this dark figure makes her seem to fade into the space, not allowing her to stand out and show her presence. This representation of connection to the space is something I could really experiment with and could be a good way to take the project with self inclusion, showing just how intimidating and overpowering I find the spaces to be. By her being in the centre of the image she does somewhat command your attention but not enough for her to be in control of the space. There is a real sense of naivity to the girl, like she may be young or lost, it makes for quite a powerful set up.

The framing of this image really draws you into the center to...

The framing of this image really draws you into the center to the view of the horse. By the silhouette framing from the trees, you feel as if you are sneaking a glimpse of the horse, like you should not be allowed to view from where the photographer is standing. It does not appear like you are viewing from an obvious area, there is an almost sneaky tone to how its framed. Though this framing I think adds a small amount of detail, but not enough to distract you from the obvious attention within the frame that should be on the horse and field. The slight air of fog makes the landscape seem quite mystical and almost helps with the aid of trying to hide it slightly, making it really seem like we should not be standing here. But you almost become entranced by it, as it really adds an air of magic to the image. You are so focused in on the horse although you cannot really see much about the, the green of the grass leads you up too it only for the fog to slightly take away more detail. There is really something quite magical too it. This use of framing is something to really consider when approaching the landscape, as it gives this sensation of not being allowed there and this could be really interested when approaching the landscapes that I feel this disconnection too as this feeling could work well.

This image really made me reflect back to cornwall. It was a scene you often saw with an extending road out into the distance with surrounding fields. Showing just how alone you could be even on a main road. Being here is quite a surreal feeling. Sometimes it feels like you have gone abroad as everything is so different. I find this really does make the way you interact with the landscape different, as i do not feel comfortable or safe enough within it to try and emerse myself further into it. This is something I hope to get across within my photography, and hopefully within spending time within some of these spaces i may begin to feel comfortable and at home here. Although i see this being a long time away.

The sea is an area at university I have found myself becoming...

The sea is an area at university I have found myself becoming more and more acquainted with. It is constantly surrounding us and is just down the road, yet I really feel I have no understand towards it. If anything it’s quite a powerful and vast space that can be quite intimidating, yet also quite comforting. The way the waves crash and roll in are quite therapeutic and you can find yourself sitting by the sea with time flying past in the blink of an eye. This is an area I should definitely look at within my work, as I feel through my time spent down here, it is an area I have really learnt to connect with and it feels quite comforting compared to the other areas I am still getting used too.

The vast well known landscape here with the texts works like a...

The vast well known landscape here with the texts works like a postcard formation. However the landscape itself is very distanced, there is no real connection to the space, you just feel its pure vastness. This makes you feel quite small in comparison to the place, making the statement, “wish you were here” less like missing someone and almost through intimidation. The space is so powerful and menacing that having someone there to see this with you would be quite the experience. This is maybe something to experiment with within the series of work, as a phrase can place an idea in the viewers mind.

roundtheplace:

Fragments of Winter

This is a handmade technique I played around with a few years back. I printed my images on to an adhesive film, cut them up, and re-assembled them on to handmade paper. I exhibited, got published etc but kinda let it drift. Thought I’d post a few just by way of a change.

The use of photomontage could be interesting when thinking about the final product for this project? Could be something to think about as here it works really effectively in selected the areas you wish to show within the frame, sets your own boundary to the image.
